6-Day Tamahagane & Knife Course (May.)


Three days of traditional Tatara iron-making, followed by three days of forging your own knife.


Service Description

Join our six-day workshop to smelt beach sand magnetite into handmade tamahagane steel using a technique over 1,000 years old. In the first three days, learn the steel-making process, then spend the final three days crafting your own knife. An optional six-day accommodation options include: 1. Senba guesthouse plus food. (8,000 yen per night). 2. Our private cabin, without food. (6,000 yen per night). Please proceed to the booking page to make a selection. *Note: Leftover tamahagane cannot be taken home. Then, guests can craft one knife for the remaining three days using the handmade steel they helped to smelt. *Please note that the tamahagane course does not include the take-home of the leftover tamahagane used to make the tamahagane knife during the course. Guests are responsible for arranging their own accommodations or can choose from the two options below: Senba is a guesthouse located a 10-minute walk from Workshop Kurogane. It includes food and board. Our private cabin is a 5-minute walk from Workshop Kurogane and can accommodate up to 2 people. It does not include food, so guests will be responsible for their own meals.
